Most times it's best to just leave a pimple alone, because it will go away eventually. Messing with it, after all, can cause it to get worse or it could cause permanent scars.

Poping a pimple on your own may be risky so if you deem it inevitable make sure you practice the proper pimple-popping precaution, please!

Is it an active volcano or a dormant one? You shouldn't even think about popping a pimple unless the pimple is starting to remind you of a volcano before it erupted. By that, we mean a pimple with a pronounced, creamy-white head of dried pus (gross!).

Never try to pop a pimple beneath the surface of your facial area. Whiteheads and pustules can be squeezed but papules and blackheads should remain untouched, lest you spread bacteria along your skin even more or, worse yet, force the bacteria deeper into your face. Be sure to pop acne that appear to have “heads”.

Squeezing an unripe pimple is a mistake most people only make once and regret forever. You might even end up with a hole on your chin or crater to remind you of the unpleasant pimple for the rest of your days. Patience is a virtue! Nine Must Do's To Successfully Pop Face Pimples

• First: wash your hands thoroughly, including your fingernails. Touching your face with dirty hands is a recipe for more acne.

• Second: Heat makes the pimple easier to pop. Before popping a bad pimple, you should either take a nice, warm shower, letting the hot water run over your face as you wash it, just wash your face in the sink using hot water, or steam your face... The heat softens your skin and opens your pores, making it less traumatic to pop the pimple. It's a good idea to apply a warm compress directly on the pimple before popping as well.

• Third: Check your pimple. Is the white gooey pus already trickling out of your pimple? Sometimes the hot compress is all you needed (in which case, you're lucky). If that's the case, then you can skip ahead to step six.

• Fourth: Sterilize a sewing needle. Right now, you're thinking, "What on earth?..." But take it from someone who's paid for riskier popping techniques - this method is worth the couple extra minutes it requires. You can sterilize the needle tip using either an open flame, rubbing alcohol or placing the needle in boiling water for several minutes and then letting it cool. This will ensure that any bacterial residing on the needle is killed and will not cause any harm when popping a zit.

• Fifth: Poke. With the sterile tip of the needle, make one gentle poke at the very surface of the pimple's white head. Don't make a deep poke! All you need to do is the slightest poke into the surface of the head, and pus will begin to ooze out.

• Six: Use tissue or gauze to squeeze, not your bare fingernails. For the sake of cleanliness and gentleness, wrap your index fingers in some of the material, using it to apply the pressure. At most. you need only apply a tiny amount of pressure immediately around the pimple to encourage the pus to flow out of it. If you feel that the pimple is too tender to apply pressure, then just hold the tissue over the pus and let it absorb.

Alternatively: grab a clean Q-tip, break it in half, and put one half in each hand. Use the tips of the Q-tip to surround the perimeter of the zit, making sure to avoid the bump itself. Then gently push the perimeter together slightly, until the pimple erupts. White pus should begin to ooze from the pore which is only your white bloodcells and plasma which has been working to help your skin heal. Keep squeezing until you get all of it out.

Know when to stop. Your body has a few good ways of telling you when it's time to stop popping the pimple. First of all, the pus will often give way to clear fluid and blood. That's a very good sign, believe it or not; you've eliminated all the pus that was in there! Once the liquid is out, use a Kleenex or the gauge square to swipe up the liquid. Ideally use a dabbing motion to allow the liquid to soak into the cloth; this will ensure that you are not spreading the bacteria on the rest of your skin.

If you don't see blood, but instead notice that the flow of pus has dwindled, then stop applying pressure. You'll likely begin to feel the pressure more acutely as the pus stops coming out anyway. Any one of these observations should signal to you that you must stop. If you try to pop the pimple beyond this point, you risk doing more harm to it than any good you did removing the pus.

• Seven: Once the zit is completely popped and the extracted waste cleaned up, use a good amount of gauze to apply small amounts of hydrogen peroxide (buy at local drug store) to clean the surface where the pimple used to reside. If you do not have hydrogen peroxide, you could squeeze about 10-15 drops of lemon juice on the gauze cloth and use it for cleaning. This will help remove access bacteria and restore the PH balance of your skin.

• Eight: Last but not least think of this pimple popping experience as a minor surgery you just performed on yourself. And as with all operations you may experience some swelling. This is where the ice come in, place the ice in a plastic bag and apply to the swollen area for 3-5 minutes or until the swelling goes down.

If you have a pimple that is hard to squeeze out, make a salt solution by mixing half a cup of warm water and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Apply the solution to the affected area using sterile gauze for about five to ten minutes. They would usually come off easily when you try to pop them again after several days.

• Lastly, always maintain proper perspective about your pimple. Where you see Mt. Vesuvius, everybody else sees a small dune or, at most, a drumlin. When we forget this, we're more likely to try the desperate, traumatic pimple-squeezing that leads to far worse pimples. Be gentle and patient as you tend to your pimple, and your face will reward you.

Pimples are caused by injuries inflicted to the cells lining the sebum canals within the hair follicles whenever the pores (which are openings of the sebum canals that you see on the surface of the skin) get filled with too much sebum (oil) or blocked by the oily substance that our body normally secretes to lubricate and protect the skin from pathogens.

What Causes Pimples?
